darling harbour

Darling Harbour is a popular tourist area right on the edge of the city where we met up with some family who were staying down there.
I love all the nautical history surrounding the Maritime Museum, the old ships, wooden boats, ropes and decking. Apparently this lighthouse built in 1920 was transported from Townsville when the museum opened in the 90's.

These enormous anchors that date back to 1839 are now a memorial to seafarers lost at sea. They are thought to have come from a wooden merchant sailing ship that was later moored off Cockatoo Island where it was used as a nautical school for reformatory boys.
I bet life was tough for them!

So there's a little bit of Australian maritime history for you.

Have a great weekend!
