decorating with blue and white

Hello..
Still in a blue and white decorating faze over here at my place, if you hadn't noticed. I've always loved blue and white. Like the changing mood of the sea, the shade of blue I like varies with my mood.

An all white background with a touch blue and white always looks crisp and fresh, don't you think? 

A shabby old vintage dresser I found and painted adds character to our place and is useful for storing collected crockery that we use every day.

In the mood for some nautical decorating? 
A simple colour palette.. navy, white, burlap/hessian. 
Stripes, sailing boats, an anchor, rope, something vintage, handmade. 
No need to go overboard.  
Simple things that can be swapped around when the mood changes.

Evokes the feeling of a boatshed and living on the water's edge.

time for a change

Hi.. how's your weekend going?
A long lazy one here in Australia. We're enjoying some much needed rain, it doesn't rain it pours. Hope none of you are affected by floods or tornadoes?! 

I've been deciding what colour to paint this this lovely old table I was given and last week finally gave it a revamp. I liked the rustic timber top as is, so I didn't need to do much. Because we've painted just about every surface and every shabby old piece of furniture in this place white, I thought it was time for a change.  

Inspired by the black furniture at Atlantic I took the plunge and mixed a dark charcoal colour with paint I already had. I like the contrast of the charcoal against mostly white.

vintage day bed

It's feeling a bit like Steptoe & Son here with vintage furniture, old doors, ladder and driftwood finds piling up on the front verandah and down the hallway. 
But.. I couldn't resist this cute cane day bed on the roadside. We cut some foam to fit & wrapped it in some white fabric I had, for now, until I get around to making a proper cover.

Hi beachcombers! 
This is what's making me happy today. A shabby old seat found on the side of the road and a towel rack made with a piece of old architrave found in a skip outside a building site. It doesn't take much to make me happy!
With some turkish towels in my favourite colours, a hat, some shells, a cushion, a lantern we now have a welcoming back door entry to our coastal abode. A place to hang the towels & keep a beach basket packed and ready go.

I primed and painted the architrave, then screwed on some hooks from the hardware shop. I would have liked some of the vintage kind, but these look a bit vintage after painting the chrome with primer and a light coat of paint so they look a bit weathered.

i used some velcro with double sided tape found at the hardware to stick this to the wall. Quick & simple and saves drilling into the wall.

after a good clean i converted them into kitchen storage & shelving. 

i like the contrast of white against the rustic timber, with some blue and white stripes thrown in.

coastal vintage table

hi everyone..

this is another furniture find that came to me a while ago. i couldn't believe my luck! i think it's a similar era to our place and a bit like the dining table my grandmother had. lovely solid oak, the kind of thing that should probably be left unpainted, but mostly white looks better in here and makes the place seem more spacious. 
i forgot to take the before photo in my hurry to paint it. oops.

our last table now has a new home. another one i rescued and painted, it was always too big for this room.

i used zinsser primer and 2 coats of whisper white. if you haven't used it, the primer goes over any surface including the metal of the ikea chair i painted.

a multi purpose table, my breakfast & morning blogging place.

later this weekend we decided to do some distressing with the sander on the top. not sure if it will stay that way.

driftwood beach

i don't think there's anything more relaxing than strolling along a deserted beach. the only sound.. waves & the odd seagull, feet in the sand, looking for interesting bits of driftwood, leaves, feathers and seaglass.

 

i found lots of small pieces to make this rustic sign. 

i can imagine it hanging outside a weathered old beach shack. 

maybe a fish?

i made this garland a while ago using similar sized pieces, whitewashed then drilled and threaded onto string.

i also picked up a few bits of plastic left behind and saw a seagull with a plastic straw in it's beak. not good for seagulls or other sealife when it ends up in the ocean.

camelias in winter

today i'm loving a bamboo chair, a turkish towel and camelias in winter.

this is a new addition to the mismatched chair collection. 

each chair with it's own story to tell.

this one was a not very attractive brown colour when i found it. nothing that a few coats of white paint couldn't fix. unfortunately the cane seat was damaged and was replaced with timber. with a cushion it won't be seen.
